Mick’s Welcome Home Party

November 29, 2009 – 12:10 am

Chris and Mick made it safely back to the UK on Friday.  Apparently they were on the local news both in London and Lincolnshire, although I can’t find any links to iPlayer (please let me know if there are).

The boys had their first beers with Chris’ friends at Molesey in the evening.  Now it’s Mick’s turn: Sunday 6th December, 18.00 at the The Cowbridge House Inn (The Dawson family pub), Horncastle Rd Boston, Lincs PE22 7AX. There’ll be a carvery catering and lots of beer for friends, family and supporters. Nothing too formal just a chance to say thank you to everyone, plus probably some sort of presentation and talk from Mick and Chris.

There’ll certainly be a few Londoners heading up there to join in the festivities.  According to Mick there’s plenty of B&Bs in the area.  If you’re interested to go and would like a lift, or if you have a space in your car, then use the comments below to arrange lift shares.  If there’s enough interest we may get a minibus.

  7. Oh how I wish I could be at Mick’s Pub on Dec 6! BUt I did manage San Francisco and will not forget that in a hurry. Am wondering if the feat has gone unnoticed in Britain.
How on earth does one acclimatise to the change from 6 months rowing on an ocean with one companion to the madness of life on an overcrowded island? Any comments?

  8. I think you are right Christine, that the amazing journey Chris and Mick have just done appears to have gone unnoticed in the UK - I cannot understand why the British Press just don’t seem interested.
And a message for everyone: Am afraid I will now be “off the air” for several weeks as am about to move house, so computer and phone will be packed away in boxes till I am reconnected at the new house.
I am sorry I will miss out on personally greeting Chris and Mick at Molesey or anywhere else, but I wish them well and have great admiration for what they have achieved - what heroes they are!
Bye-bye for now (till the next ocean crossing maybe….) - S from C xx

  9. There is little press because the only thing the media are interested in are ‘headlines of death and sorrow, better tomorrow, madmen on the rampage.’

  10. Good luck with the move Sue from Cornwall. Hope the challenge goes well and you are back on line to find out about the party. Press coverage is disappointing,Christine. Perhaps we could make up a story involving a so-called celebrity ie. someone who can’t sing, dance or ice skate going rowing….or is that an idea for the next reality show….Strictly Come Rowing, how about it boys there might be some money and mileage in it, and good footage of the bens of ths world falling into the Thames numerous times, or Kate humble getting her hair wet…and what about blisters in funny places, or being confined to a small damp churning cabin on the ocean for a few weeks…Tiger Woods could join in to atone for his “transgressions” and he is very rich!! Oh well…how do you turn silly idea into reality…there must be someone out there. Don’t suppose Chris and Mick are reading this, too busy sleeping and partying, but just in case, hope your heads are warm.

  11. Yesteday Ann and I met up with a very handsome, svelte, tanned and stylishly hirsute of scalp Cap’n Dawson of the seafaring vessel Bojangles. His first mate Chris was notably absent at the Brighton Marina rendezvous- a fish eatery once named The Walk Of Fame and the Hollywood style star embedded pavement outside its doors surely should have an additional implant to immortalize our two rowing icons! So, Brighton Council take note and heed! However, our wine glasses were raised in tribute to Mick and Chris, two macho heroes as platefuls of fish’n chips with mushy peas were voraciously consumed followed by a death-by-chocolate offering piled high on a plateful of ice cream . We marvelled at such brilliant effort and achievement and for Mick, applauded his third time lucky ‘Everest’ record breaking event. However, SHAME! on the British media for their apathy and rudeness in ignoring my many attempts to alert them to the riches blogged daily at goldengateendeavour.com and the imminent triumphant arrival of two British maritime adventurers in San Francisco. (Six months at sea in an open boat! beat that Captain Bligh!) Hurrah! for the many exuberant Americans, their dignitaries and their newshounds who celebrate and reward the real X-traordinary factor in such welcoming style. Mick Dawson, as one of the brightest students of 2003 at the film school, I predict cinematic success to follow and, who knows? if Hollywood should beckon, then we may look forward to the ‘buddy’ movie of the century to rival Butch Cassidy and the Milky Bar Kid! Well done and welcome home. And finally, to the new young Mrs Dawson, amazing Grace. Our sympathies are with you. Hang in there Cinderella, you shall go to the ball and your Prince will come soon!

  12. Greetings to one and all! I keep meaning to add an odd comment or two (my beloved first born assures me that the vast majority of my comments are never less than ‘odd’). However, as time is of the essence, may I respond initially to Webmaster Rich’s invitation to publicise transport arrangements to Mick’s welcome home party.

Chris and I are heading up to Boston tomorrow (Sunday 6th) leaving Chertsey around noon. We’ve booked into the Premier Inn for the night and will return on Monday, leaving Boston about 10.00.am. We have two spare seats (three at a pinch), so if anyone would like to join us, you’d be most welcome to do so.

  13. Those of you who missed this party will have to wait for the feature length documentary film about the Golden Gate Endeavour.

Suffice it to say that there were some choice moments recorded that will be available for outtakes on the DVD…

But really, Steve’s Man Bag on camera???
