Live From The Flotilla
November 13, 2009 – 4:09 pm

Chris & Mick travelled 13.8 miles East-South-East (heading 105.5°) on day 190
They completed their journey, passing under the Golden Gate Bridge at 0825 local time
Their journey time since departing Choshi Marina was 189 days, 10 hours, 55 minutes
They ended 0.0 miles from San Francisco (13.8 miles closer than yesterday)
They covered miles 5068 to 5082 of the trip
Their average pace for the journey was 26.8 miles/day towards San Francisco
1245 (2045 UK Time): Article in the San Francisco Chronical.
1240 (2040 UK Time): Channel 4 have just arrived to interview Mick and Chris. We’ve now had visits from all 4 major networks in the bay area. We’ve also had visits from a number of people who’ve seen the arrival on the local news today and have come down to pass on their congratulations. The local support has been amazing.
1220 (2020 UK Time): The crew have just had a feature on KTVU, the local interest has been fantastic, fingers crossed a national channel picks it up.
1210 (2010 UK Time): The result of the weigh-in, Chris has lost 22kg and Mick 18kg since departing Choshi Marina, approximately 20% of their bodyweight. Chris is now a svelte 74kg, Mick a no-less-overweight 80kg.
1120 (1920 UK Time): They’ve had a meal, been checked over by a doctor (all healthy, if rather slim and a bit smelly), they’ve signed some customs forms, and received a lot of well wishes. They’re still talking to everyone, and Mick’s having another beer (he says he’s trying to keep up with TLMB and John Hannafin who are busy doing the same in Lagos, Nigeria).
1110 (1910 UK Time): The boys have just enjoyed watching their arrival on the ABC7 news!
1000 (1800 UK Time): The crew have retired to the clubhouse. They are still surrounded by well-wishers and journalists, giving interviews, and having another beer!
0940 (1740 UK Time): The crew have been on dry land for the last half hour. They’ve been welcomed by the British Consul-General Julian Evans on behalf of the Queen, and the Mayor of San Francisco Gavin Newsom. Right now their still on the dock, showing the journalists and the mayor around the boat.
0833 (1633 UK Time): After cheers and celebrations, and I think a few tears, the crew are handed beers by the whaling boat Renegade. They’re hooked up to the inflatable and enjoying a tow to the club house where breakfast awaits.
08:25:25 (16:25:25 UK Time): Chris And Mick row under the Golden gate bridge!!!
![]() |
![]() |
0822 (1622 UK Time): 200 yards to go and we’ve been joined by some surf paddlers. Chris is raising the union jack.
0818 (1618 UK Time): About 400 yards to go, the boys look so thin, but they’re wearing grins from ear to ear.
0810 (1610 UK Time): 8 cruisers, 4 helicopters, 1 light plane and an old whale boat are accompanying the crew in the last half mile to the bridge. The official time keeping vessel is in position. The skies are crystal blue, the seas are calm. Perfect conditions.

Insane! You guys rowed like Vikings!
By DeanCSmith on Nov 13, 2009
As someone who knows how tough it is to spend a mere 104 days at sea, I have some inkling of just how deliriously happy the boys must be. OUTSTANDING!
My good friend Ian Tuller just rang me from the deck of his sailboat, the Phoebe - he was there to greet the boys as they rowed in under the Golden Gate Bridge. He says their reception was just amazing - loads of boats there to greet them. He sounded really excited - I can only imagine what the atmosphere must be like.
Mick and Chris - WELL DONE!!! Enjoy a well-earned beer or twenty!

Well done boys. It will probably take several years for you to fully realise what you’ve just achieved, but achieve it you did!
Just one thing - I’m getting withdrawal symptoms already with no Brits being tossed around on the oceans of the world.
Any chance of you taking a spin down the coast to Mexico or somewhere just to give us something to follow in the month or so till the Woodvale race gets under way? Nooo….thought not. Still, no harm in asking…

Awesome, awesome stuff guys. Chris, if you got my text, I heard the conker’s heartbeat today for the first time! Couple of hours after you ‘paddled’ under the bridge.
I’m a bit miffed though Chris about your weight - far too close to mine. eek. Perhaps you could write it down as a diet plan and make some more mega bucks for the charidees. I’m sure some celeb would endorse it…. see you back at MBC soon! x
By Gina on Nov 13, 2009
Great news….my train trip from Leeds has felt like crossing an ocean, wind, rain, currents or cancelled trains holding me back from hearing that you had arrived. We are so pleased and proud, can’t wait to see a skinny Chris, Well done Lots of love from us both

I couldn’t have gotten a better present for my 60th birthday than to know that two “oarsome” heroes had made it safely to shore in SF. I will share the story with my patients when they find it difficult to deal with problems in their lives. I had a feeling it would be on my birthday even with all the delays. All my respect and good wishes to both of you.
By J. Scott Evans on Nov 14, 2009
Congratulations. What an awesome achievement. Who’s going to start a support group now that we don’t have a blog to follow anymore?
By Gray in Africa on Nov 14, 2009

Congratulations to you both.

An incredible achievement is really an understatement. A powerful adventure which has shown what two people can do … if they have the brawn, the brains and the opportunity. Put your feet up and enjoy sleeping on dry land.

Congratulations doesn’t quite seem to cover your achievement! ‘Britain’s Got Talent’; ‘X- factor’ - I think you two epitomise the concept! Well done to you both, I am honoured and humbled to have a link with you.
Reading your blog has been part of my daily routine for the last six months - I have followed the (literal!) ups and downs and I (with many others) shed a tear at the news of your safe arrival. Very emotional, but nothing compared to the palpable relief of your loved ones getting you back on solid ground.

Amazing guys! Congratulations, you are incredible! Just told the hotel in Thailand and they are equally amazed and looking on this website! Full of questions like ‘how did you find the way and not end up in India?’ ‘how did you survive the waves?’ ‘how did you do it in a boat that small?’ ‘how did you go to the toilet?’. I love it, you are total heroes. x

Extraordinary! I bow to you. How I cried when I read about your voyage in the SF Chronicle, especially your landfall! In 1975 I sailed to from north of San Francisco to the Marquesas in a dugout canoe - the easy direction, though the crossarms began to crack mid-ocean. At last we rowed ashore to white sand, our senses were bombarded by brilliant red rocks, utterly green foliage…we felt drunk. Nothing like it. I can imagine how you felt seeing the Golden Gate and bow again to you guys. Welcome! -Nancy
By Nancy Mosk on Nov 14, 2009
#109 running out of superlatives. You made the previously impossible possible going land to land; putting her under the bridge after so long a jorney is astonishing. Daring. Formidable. Indomitable. And pure class. Sincerest congratulations. Lap it up guys. You earned it.

I agree with what Biff said above - like him, I am beginning to suffer withdrawal symptoms due to lack of daily diary blogs from Bo on the North Pacific! What an exceptional amount of messages of congratulations there are here today - and well worth them all! I guess you two guys, Chris and Mick, are resting today and trying to get your land legs back. Enjoy this time with your families and friends. Best wishes and kind regards.

This morning we went out on our usual Sunday whaleboat club row in the Renegade and we couldn’t stop talking about how amazing it was to have been out on the water Friday morning as you crossed the finish line. We feel so honored and inspired to have witnessed the conclusion of your tremendous historic achievement. It was such a special moment we are all holding close in our hearts.

Well done boys, I always knew you’d do it. Have fun in San Fran.
By Chris on Nov 16, 2009
Well done - you got there in the end!
We hope you had lots of food when you arrived.
I can’t believe you rowed all that way.
No-one else has done it quite like you two!
Let’s hope you don’t have to row back!!!
Will you be doing anything like this in the future?
It makes us think that when we want to give up we should really just try to keep on going!
Well done

Every morning I would check in with your web site to see what progress you have made while I slept in my little corner of the world. Your journey has been an amazing example of pure will power and team spirit. I can only imagine it will take you some time to get used to soft sheets, hot showers, and warm meals……but not too much time. So glad your journey ended safely and was such a huge success.

Incredible effort guys. Seeing that pic of you rowing under the GGB gave me goosebumps (something I don’t get that much here in Egypt).
Already looking forward to your next adventure.

Very inspiring. So glad you made it OK.
Have you heard of Curtis Ebbesmeyer who studies the ocean gyres by tracking flotsam? Know you saw a lot of that. His book is “Flotsametrics and the Floating World”, new this year. Fun reading, maybe after all the partying….

Two weeks ago, the tale of your adventure reached the shores of Dubai, and ever since you have had several very inspired blog-followers here keeping up with your progress. Massive congratulations to you both from the UAE!! An immense, inspirational achievement that leaves us all looking on in Awe. Amazing. Well done!!
By Elly Besley on Nov 17, 2009
Gents - a supreme achievement - I was able to celebrate in style with you as 13th was my birthday! See you in UK/Lagos for beers next year! I am sure the party is ongoing. Well done!

Not much more that I can add to the sentiments & comments above.
Mick, we haven’t met, but to spend 6 months at sea with Chris for company you really must be the best of the best and have proved to be a giant of the ocean rowing world in the true tradition of Fairfax, Blyth & Bird.
Christoph - what else can I say? We’ve got a few of them at MBC, but as legends go, I think you are now well and truly at the top of a very impressive list.
Absolutely astounding achievement…well done & congratulations.
By Higgsy on Nov 17, 2009
Well done, especially to Chris. I only had the problem of dragging Mick through RM Training you’ve had to drag him all the way from Choshi
A fantastic feat, Ross.

Hey, Come-on! Let’s make it up to at least 150 messages, if not 200! Hope Chris and Mick are okay and recovering after their 6 month marathon and enjoying a bit of luxury in San Fran with friends and family.
By Sue from Cornwall on Nov 18, 2009
We cannot really add anymore to what as already been said about what a fantastic achievement this is. You have both done yourselves proud and deserve all the congratulations that are being sent to you. It was an epic voyage for you both and one that we looked forward to reading about on the blogs, congratulations once again. (Mick, we will see you for a beer or two when you get back to England!)
By Kevin and Sheila Reeson on Nov 18, 2009
Chris,
I’ve not kept up-to-date with final progress. I feel very guilty about this and also know I’ve missed out on following the best bit. I’ll be going through your blogs to catch up.
I’m immensely proud to know you, even if it’s not that well. It would be great to meet up and when you’re fed up with that fizzy American stuff I would be delighted to buy you a proper beer (and scotch egg of course) at The Mitre.
Many, many congratulations. The many people I’ve told about your exploits just cannot believe what you’ve done and some experienced ocean-going sailors described you as completely, something mad. But you knew that anyway. Enjoy
Mike
