Day 162 - First gull

October 17, 2009 – 8:30 am

During a brief lull in the weather yesterday Mick made a dash for it and while doing so saw our first gull since leaving Japan. It’s yet another sign of how close we are though of course the sign that were both rather keen on is the sight of a large red bridge on the horizon.

Hopefully in the next few days we should aso pass through the last of the intercontinental shipping routes and we should start to see smaller coastal vessels and fishing boats.

The weather here changed rapidly after both of us being stuck in the cabin for a day as the front passed. One moment wind from the south the next wind from the west. We were off. The wind has eased off a bit today and then swung right round W-N-E and is now blowing from the SE but we have it on reliable intelligence that this will change back to west later today and give us a good kicking in the right direction at least for a bit.

I promise that tomorrow I’ll mend the connection on the tracker unit (for the 6th time) I could have done it today but with the wind against us it would mean rowing the same miles twice and neither Mick nor I are keen on doing that. Don’t worry dot watchers come Monday it’ll be up and working again (although I can’t say how long for as we’ve now run out of most of the things needed to mend it).

The tracker playing up but Chris sent me his position with the post, and based on this:
41°10′0”N 134°14′0”W
Chris & Mick travelled 18.6 miles East (heading 85.8°) on day 162
They ended 667.5 miles from San Francisco (17.5 miles closer than yesterday)
They covered miles 4397 to 4414 of the trip
Their average pace so far has been 27.2 miles/day towards San Francisco
They have 24.5 days remaining at this rate, so would arrive in San Francisco on 10 Nov 2009
Their target heading for the shortest route to San Francisco is East-South-East (heading 106.4°)
See where the boat is

Sponsor Thanks

Thanks today go to Gary McGill who sponsored miles 4400 and 4401. The crew covered these yesterday morning.

Would you like to sponsor a mile?

  2. Aaah Chris I see you have not responded to Laser.Beam’s claims that the sea moving Bo about could do better at draughts than your accomplished self! That’s right my friend, don’t rise to the bait. Esepcially when he’s right!

As for MC, good move yesterday Dad Martin, I respond with Bristol Temple Mead.

    Get out that!

  4. Hello Kalontika.
It all looks Greek to me.

Can we play by the rules please, Dad Martin
    and Biff?
    I move to Turnham Green.

Biff: I think this Laser.Beam of whom you speak must have hurt Chris to his very sole. I mean, surely nobody can be THAT bad at draughts?

  6. Linda have you not checked the 2009 Pacific Row rules. Amateur.

  9. Good Evening Chris and Mick - and Saturday bloggers
Glad to hear there was a “bit of a lull” in the weather. The next obstacles will be the local fishing boats, which I hope you will be able to dodge safely whilst battling with the strong winds and big waves - perhaps you can poach some fish for your dinner from one of the boats….. that would make a nice change from the old Bolognasty! The fishermen might even fillet the fish for you while you wait!
In order to join in with breaking the rules of the game, I am going to put forward REDRUTH! Keeeeeeeep smiling, keeeeeeeep rowing and please keeeeeeeeep safe.

  10. Ah-ha - is Biff back in Cornwall? Again, you have chosen nice sunny weather for your visit!

  11. As per Article 1.5 of the Constitution the Rules of have been established to govern all aspects of organising and staging, as defined in Article 2.2 of said Constitution. Having consulted with member Federations the arbitration dictates that Turnham Green is not a valid move on the basis that the Battle of Turnham Green was fought on 13th November (1964) and that Chris and Mick are due to arrive BEFORE that date.

Its not Greek its Belarusian - losely translated means:- Amusing to write vital. Nevertheless, in order to make a really interesting blog, it is necessary not only to report on something, but do so in the form of interest Snoy.

  13. Mick: there is good news & bad news. I met the Typical Lightweight Legionnaire in Pats yesterday at about 17:30 - he was hammered. He’s going to send you some on-line abuse.

The bad news is he’s permanently back in Lagos. The good news is, his wife has forgiven you, him, me and he is allowed out again. The bad news is, she has opened her own bar (oh dear). The good news is that as it’s on the mainland I’m not allowed to go (but that doesn’t stop you and the Lightweight Crab going)
