Day 145 - Left Hand Down A Bit
September 30, 2009 – 8:33 amWe were released from the sea anchor yesterday and have made reasonable progress since although perhaps loosing more miles south than we might have liked but the fact of the matter is that we need to get miles east at almost any cost at the moment. There’s still an opportunity before we get to 130 (ish) west to regain those so it’s not a massive hassle…yet.
Last night was very chilly again and the full 3 jacket and sallapettes combo was working overtime. Except for a few T-shirts and another pair of sallapettes that is pretty much all the clothing I have on board so lets hope it doesn’t get much colder. The cold doesn’t seem to affect Mick anywhere near as much as it does me. I’m rather jealous!
Apart from a rather sploshy and cold evening and a sunny but cold and sploshy morning there really isn’t anything new to report unfortunately. We haven’t seen a dolphin or whale in ages (where can they be hiding?), the handful of birds that we see each day are still the same species and there continues to be the occasional piece of litter that floats past - yuk!

Chris & Mick travelled 34.0 miles South-East (heading 129.1°) on day 145
They ended 958.1 miles from San Francisco (28.5 miles closer than yesterday)
They covered miles 4095 to 4124 of the trip
Their average pace so far has been 28.4 miles/day towards San Francisco
They have 33.7 days remaining at this rate, so would arrive in San Francisco on 2 Nov 2009
Their target heading for the shortest route to San Francisco is East (heading 95.5°)

Sponsor Thanks
Thanks to Mike Turner and his alter-ego The Peperami who sponsored miles 4000 and 4001. The boys covered these yesterday morning. Mike used to row with Chris at Molesey. More lately he’s been seen cycling, running and swimming long distances around South-East England as he trains with his triathlon friends.

Goodmorning guys,
God!here i am complaining of being cold on land where everything around me is dry but just a bit chilly and when i think about what you guys are going thru;the adverse weather conditions you are braving;it makes me feel guilty for moaning about being dry and for moaning about nothing actually.Fancy being wet all the time in a weather like that out there?!
Keep up the good work guys;your efforts will be rewarded one way or another,God is on your side,DO NOT BE WARY!!
I love you very much Michael, you are my HERO!!Kisses

Chaps glad to hear from webmaster Richard this morning that the Tsunami in the Pacific had not affected you guys, sadly it has caused devastation in Samoa and American Samoa. As Richard said to me this morning Tsunamis don’t really cause to many problems in the deep ocean, just when they reach shallow waters close to land.
Still it reminds us all of the challenges you face daily. Great job, and still getting closer to SF every day.

This will either provoke a blank response or a groan and my only defence is that I’ve pinched this off a colleague…
There are 10 types of in this world; those who understand binary and those that don’t.
Press on.

Insert the word ‘People’ in between ‘of’ and ‘in’.
Honestly, it’s the way I tell ‘em.
By Boing Boing on Sep 30, 2009
Hummmmm, yes Boing Boing… it IS the way you tell ‘em!
Good Morning C and M
Glad you are keeping well wrapped up to protect you from the chilly wind. A spot of rowing might also help to warm you up…, followed by a nice cup of tea (if you have any left??).
Forecast in the UK is for cooler weather crawling in from the North, so we might also be feeling a bit cooler by tomorrow…
Keeeeeeeep warm, keeeeeeep smiling, keeeeeeep rowing and keeeeeeeep safe.

Mate, this whole left hand down a bit nonsense is getting serious. I know you’d have to get a new website name, but if you ended up having to come ashore further north of San Fran you wouldn’t be dissapointed.
You’ll recall Tori and I performed a survey for you last year (http://pacificpedal.blogspot.com/) and I can recomend you avoid the seafood in North Bend - other than that knock yourself out. Looks like you might make Port Orford which has a lovely beach you’ll be able to pull up on (like Tom McClean did in Ireland).

Two blondes were driving along a road by a wheat field when they saw a blonde in the middle of the field rowing a row boat.
The driver blonde turned to her friend and said “You know – it’s blondes like that that give us a bad name!”
To this, the other blonde replies “I know it, and if I knew how to swim, I’d go out there and drown her.”

SOMEWHERE… IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE…
On a group of beautiful deserted islands in the middle of nowhere, the following people are suddenly stranded by, as you might expect, a shipwreck:
2 Italian men and 1 Italian woman
2 French men and 1 French woman
2 German men and 1 German woman
2 Greek men and 1 Greek woman
2 English men and 1 English woman
2 Bulgarian men and 1 Bulgarian woman
2 Japanese men and 1 Japanese woman
2 Chinese men and 1 Chinese woman
2 American men and 1 American woman
2 Irish men and 1 Irish woman
One month later on these same absolutely stunning deserted islands in the middle of nowhere, the following things have occurred:
- One Italian man killed the other Italian man for the Italian woman.
- The two French men and the French woman are living happily together in a menage-a-trois.
- The two German men have a strict weekly schedule of alternating visits with the German woman.
- The two Greek men are sleeping with each other and the Greek woman is cleaning and cooking for them.
- The two English men are waiting for someone to introduce them to the English woman.
- The two Bulgarian men took one long look at the endless ocean, and another long look at the Bulgarian woman, and started swimming.
- The two Japanese men have faxed Tokyo and are awaiting instructions.
- The two Chinese men have set up a pharmacy, a liquor store, a restaurant and a laundry, and have got the woman pregnant in order to supply employees for their stores.
- The two American men are contemplating the virtues of suicide because the American woman keeps endlessly complaining about her body; the true nature of feminism; how she can do everything they can do; the necessity of fulfilment; the equal division of household chores; how sand and palm trees make her look fat; how her last boyfriend respected her opinion and treated her nicer than they do; how her relationship with her mother is improving and how at least the taxes are low and it isn’t raining.
- The two Irish men have divided the island into North and South and set up a distillery. They do not remember if sex is in the picture because it gets sort of foggy after the first few litres of coconut whisky. But they’re satisfied because at least the English aren’t having any fun.

Chris and Mick in case you can’t access a binary decoder, or be bothered to figure out what Fat Bloke is on about, he’s just enlightened us to the fact that he loves binary.

It’s just come to my attention that there’s a new beer being brewed in, of all places, Scotland. Called ‘Nanny State’, it boasts a humble 1.1% alcohol by volume. Rest assured your Bojangles beer is 4.2% and we have a crate or two awaiting your arrival.
By Dad Martin on Sep 30, 2009
If a winery produces wine, does a binary produce bine? What does it taste like, I’ve never had a glass of bine before - but that’s probably because I’m told I’m a philistine.
Isn’t a philistine of the those people who’s always it dispute with Israel over the Gaza Strip and the Occupied West Bank?

Margaret, that is a quality global dit. As the lovely Mrs Dawson said in post #1, “God is on your side, DO NOT BE MARY!!” Who’s Mary?

Earlier one said
Forget the binary nonsence and concentrate on a spot of rowing - nearly there boys
By Dizzie Blonde on Sep 30, 2009
Impressive, Dizzie Blonde - I agree especially with the earlier message, if that’s really what it said! However, maybe this is all a bit of sculdugery and you are actually transmitting top secret messages ….. perhaps to the big bouncy castle that Bo nearly bumped into a few weeks ago…! I wonder if C and M understood any of the dit dahs…
Hope the wind is blowing in the right direction for C and M out there on the North Pacific - and that the sea is not too rough and that you are pushing a few miles behind you. Keeeeeeep smiling, keeeeeeep rowing and keeeeeeeep safe.
By Sue from Cornwall on Sep 30, 2009
hope the boys aren’t engaging in skullduggery (or skullbuggery either)
By Typical Lightweight Matelot on Oct 1, 2009
Well spotted TLM - my silly spelling mistake! My excuse is a faulty keyboard and arthritic fingers! I assume the boys are too busy rowing to be engaged in anything like that!
Keeeeeep smiling Chris and Mick (as always), keeeeeeeep rowing and keeeeeeeeep safe.
