Day 133 - Bolog-nasty To Bolog-yummy (Well Bolog-edible)
September 18, 2009 – 10:15 amI suppose it had to happen sooner or later. Last night we both tucked into our bolognasty and discovered to our disgust that it was actually entirely palletable. Obviously our bodies have been craving the calories and instructed the taste buds to like whatever gets thrown at it. It was a bit of a shock though. Having said that a few days ago I made Mick a meal of Lamb Pilaf. Later when he commented on how nice his Thai Chicken Rice was he took some persuading before finally believeing that is taste buds were playing tricks.
At the moment everything is damp. Bedding, clothing, cabin you name it. We’ve had several days without a decent spell of sunshine and with a lot of water sploshing on deck there is no chance of it drying out. Hopefully that will change over the next few days as we could also do with some solar charge for the batteries so we can make some water. We managed to snatch a few litres this morning but it could certainly do with a healthy spell of sunshine.
That’s the one thing we can’t really do without. We do have a hand pump unit too but for one hours pumping to produce the same amount of water that the main unit can produce in under 12 minutes it’s unlikely that we’ll go down that route.
As we sat down to brunch this morning I noticed a great green shape in the water. What on earth could it be? Was there a new species of fish as yet undiscovered by humans? No it was a large piece of green plastic sheeting floating about a metre below the surface. Thankfully the amount of rubbish we’ve seen has diminished slightly from a few days ago when every stroke brought us a fresh patch of trash but sadly there’s certianly more out here to be seen if we look closely enough.

Hi guys,
Yipee i’m the first one on today:)I trust with the amount of time you guys have spent on sea and all the wonderfully crap meals you’ve been having in the past 5 months i’m sure that green plastic sheeting is bound to taste good too.i think you guys could really do with a proper home-cooked meal but remember the harrrrrrder you row,the quicker you get back here and with that comes a good home cooked meal…am i making any sense or just blabbing to myself?hhhmmmmmm!i think the sea is getting to me as well

Hello Chris and Mick,
Its been a while and its brilliant to see how many miles you have been making, sterling effort! Fingers crossed for some sunshine, perhaps another sacrifice is needed this time for sun to dry out your bedding and clothing.
I suppose it is good news that bolognasty has turned into bolog-edible, however hopefully your tastebuds have not become too accustomed to bolognasty and various other freezedried food and would heaven forbid turn their nose up to home cooked meals (that is if taste buds had noses!) Anyways, happy rowing!

Aaaargh! I don’t believe it!
This morning’s contribution from the homestead was to have been a funny story about a spelling mistake which I spotted recently on a pub menu while in Yorkshire.
Heading the list of desserts was a ‘lemon something-or-other’, which was duly described as “a citrus tart, light on the pallet (sic)…….”
Of course, what they meant to have written was “…light on the palate…”.
This renders your bolognasty “PALATABLE”.
That said, however, I do have a vague recollection of 0.4 tonne of your dehydrated food being delivered onto our drive (way back in March, before your departure) on a PALLET……..so, in this sense ONLY is your food also ‘palletable’.
All of which reminds me of my favourite spelling mistake of all time. It featured in, of all places, the obituary column of our local paper, and made mention of a gentleman who had unfortunately lost his wife “after a long-standing lover (sic) condition”. Ouch!
All the best from your friendly nit-picking b****** and ever-loving Dad.

It might be thought by some to be a terrible admission, but I’ve just been listening to Radio 2!!! The music being played was Chris Rea’s new song: entitled “Yeah! I’ve come so far. but I’ve still got so far to go”…………..You, on the other hand, have only 1250 miles to go! Hang in there, guys, won’t be long now!

Hope you got the email about the Marine Conservation Society, which is for some reason located in the centre of Britain at Ross-on-Wye, and is keen to have photo’s of rubbish with which to illustrate their campaign against marine pollution. Perhaps some of you surf rowers could also contribute from our local shores. Sun out in Hereford today, so it will soon get to the Pacific as well. Keep going and it will soon be less than 1000 to go.

I once worked for a recruitment company and one of the girls in the office put an advert on seek.com and in the ad’ it had the word ‘account’ but she missed out the ‘o’. Quality! I left it for 3 days before I told her.

Rugby is coming to Nigeria! Last night was the launch of Nigerian rugby in - of all places - Pat’s Bar on V.I. It’s the only pub in Nigeria in the Lonely Planet guide.
Two special attendees attendees were England legends Jeremy Guscott and Victor Ubogu.
Celebrity attendees were; John Hanafin (TLWCB) & Cynthia; TLM & my wife Moley.
Jeremy even came and had a pint with us. Top bloke, taller than I expected.
Oh yeah, well done on the mileage too.

Guys, fantastic journey! I have enjoyed reading and keeping up, but have never posted a comment. Kind of a silent fan….
I will be in the California area from October 18th to the 24th. If by some chance y’all make it to SF during this time, I will surly make the trip out for the celebration.
Best regards, One of your many friends in Lagos, Nigeria

Hi Chris and Mick
Sorry I am so late in putting up a message today - house-hunting yet again, and at long last I’ve found somewhere to rest my weary head! Poor you having to sleep on wet beds - yukkkkk - but then I imagine you are getting used to that by now. Was interested to read Anthill’s message regardfing the Marine Conservation Society - my message to them is that it sounds as though cleaning up the oceans is going to be a huge monster of a job, but if they can make the world aware of the problem, that would be an excellent beginning, as it is a job that must be tackled urgently. I do hope they will, so if anyone has any pics of ocean polution, please send them to the MCS. You are doing well boys, despite losing the correct use of your taste buds! I’m sure Grace will think up some really yummy home-cooked meal to serve to you on your arrival on dry land - and it will be the best meal you’ve ever tasted!! Keeeeeep smiling, keeeeeep rowing, try and keeeeep dry and keeeeeep safe.

We’ve just been on a narrowboat for 5 days and even after 48 hours I haven’t got my land legs back yet !!! What will it be like for you when you get on to terra firma? I bet you can’t wait to find out. Not long now. Keep your spirits up,keep strong, keep rowing hard (when the weather permits)and you’ll be at the Golden Gate before you know it.

Disastrous news from the world of sport. Leeds Rhinos demolished Hull Kingston Rovers 44:8. A week of mourning has been declared in the TLM household. Now where’s my black veil?
