Day 117 - Ready, Steady …

September 2, 2009 – 10:00 am

So the last few days may not have been the most exciting for you watching at home or (especially) for us. The weather’s been against us and we’ve been sitting on the sea anchor. During these periods we sit around, sleep whenever we can, stretch out the process of cooking dinner as much as possible and generally rest up.

Today it’s been my turn to cook but thankfully the waves are smaller than they have been so my work has been much easier. Also definately of benefit is the reduced amount of food that ended up on the deck and wasted thanks to over excited waves.

We’re just about to have afternoon tea and then (as the wind has died down and the waves are coming more from the south) we will haul in the sea anchor and do what we can to make miles. We’re due a decent patch of following weather. So those of you who are thinking about buying a boat for the Atlantic race then watch this space because you’re about to see what Bo can do with decent following conditions for more than a few days.

Unfortunately both Mick and I are 117 days into the challenge so maybe not as bouncy as we once were but you’ll certainly get the idea.

37°20′54”N 158°31′10”W
Chris & Mick travelled 2.8 miles East-South-East (heading 102.9°) on day 117
They ended 1961.3 miles from San Francisco (2.5 miles closer than yesterday)
They covered miles 3118 to 3121 of the trip
Their average pace so far has been 26.7 miles/day towards San Francisco
They have 73.5 days remaining at this rate, so would arrive in San Francisco on 14 Nov 2009
Their target heading for the shortest route to San Francisco is East-North-East (heading 77.9°)
See where the boat is

  2. Dig deep fellas and let’s see some big mileage put away. We’re all behind you - about 15,000 miles behind you actually.

  3. 3rd 500 boys, thats where you win the race!!!

  4. Afternoon tea?!! You’re on a wild, world beating exciting and amazing adventure not on a bl**dy cruise aboard the QE2!!!

By Biff on Sep 2, 2009

  5. I also assume that if you are having afternoon tea then you found Mick’s secret stash of scones, clotted cream and strawberry jam?

  6. Keep going guys you are almost there;it’s not too long now.it will all be over very soon…

  7. I’m trying to gauge how it compares with the HoRR…the 3rd 500 must be roughly equal to Hammersmith Bridge, so make sure you aim for the lamp post, look up and even though it hurts like a bitch, smile for the photos!!
Let’s see what the Empacher of ocean rowing can really do. Crack on boys.

PS thanks to Dad Martin for hand delivering the rather groovy “Golden Gate Endeavour” T-shirt so promptly. I can thoroughly recommend (and even suggest) that all bloggers get one, though how how Amy from America & Erinn from Toronto will get theirs I’m not sure…they appear to be just outside the Chertsey delivery area.
Dad Martin & I had a long chat about where your next trip would be and the conclusion was that it shouldn’t be any further than Tesco’s on Hurst Park.

  8. I am a little bit disappointed that today’s prediction is for a 14th of November arrival. Don’t be missing my party now Mann Quinn! Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a cracking 60 miler to make up for it.
PS this Sunday you’re missing a a Team EPIC and friends lunch of roast lamb with all the trimmings. Jealous? You should be.
PPS you also missed the World Gravy Wrestling Championships in Lancashire last week. Yes, just as you imagine it involved a lot of silly northerners rolling around in a paddling pool full of out of date gravy

  9. Hi Guys
Hmmmm - afternoon tea. Do you use and re-use tea bags, or tea leaves, I wonder. Has anyone ever surveyed how many times one can re-use a tea bag before it loses its flavour and colour completely? Hope you don’t have to make tea using sea-water - that would be yukky, I would imagine! I suppose you could use sea weed to make tea if you run out of tea bags. If you do not have scones, perhaps you could make rice cakes using old rice. I will now shut up as I am waffling on a bit (pardon the pun). Good to know you intend to do a bit of rowing, so keeeeep smiling, keeeeeeep rowing well and keeeeeep safe.

  10. Sue, with PG Tips the 4th cup of tea becomes very watery.

  11. I do hope it’s Earl Grey?? None of that Lapsang “I’ve been filtered through a peat bog over a Millenia ” Souchong kack

BTW, Norway is flippin expensive! £12.50 on the BigMac scale !! good job we took 4 litres of Rum & Voddy from Duty Free :@)), beer was £8.50 a pint!! Owzat for “adapt & overcome”

We had some wind & rain of biblical proportions whilst in our ickle leaky tent.. so some big fat empathy is comin’ at ya. Anymore shark slapping while I’ve been away?

  12. Thanks Biff for the tip on tea bags (sorry - another pun!). I assume Earl Grey tea bags would last the same as PG Tips. Cath, you wouldn’t catch me inside an ikkie leaky tent in the weather we’ve been experiencing in Cornwall today! I would have been washed away, tent and all! However, they say that a change is as good as a rest, so hope you enjoyed your trip to Norway. Meanwhile, out in the North Pacific….. hope Chris and Mick have been busy on the oars and that they are safe and happy.

  13. SUCCESS IS A JOURNEY NOT A DESTINATION - take time to enjoy it, day by day, you are truly on one amazing adventure guys, with scones and clotted cream to boot!

Stay safe, and as Winston once said - You may have to fight a battle more than once to achieve victory….

Keep rowing - you are doing so well…. Stay safe
