Day 110 - Bouncy Bouncy

August 26, 2009 – 4:28 pm

The wind’s picked up and yet again we are flying along thank you very much. If this keeps up…

Apart from the bouncy sea state and lots of rowing not too much has happened. Mick saw a Killer Whale about 400m away from Bo yesterday afternoon but uncharacteristically it didn’t come to investigate us. (this somehow always happens when I’m in the cabin and crawl out to be faced with an empty ocean.) Ah well. Maybe next time.

However uninteresting today is tomorrow will certainly be one in the celebratory diary for us as it will mark Mick’s one year at sea in an ocean rowing boat (thankfully not the same one) Thanks to webmaster Rich for coming up with the details below.

1) Atlantic, 07/10/01 to 16/12/01, 70 days 9h 12min
2) Pacific, June 2 2003 to June 14 2003, 12 days 18h 35 min
3) Pacific, May 6 2004 to August 23 2004 109days 4h
4) Atlantic, December 6 2005 - February 05 2006, 61d 02h 50min

That totals 253 days, 10 hours, 37 mins.  So the year (365 days) will come after 111 days, 13 hours, 23 minutes of this trip.

That is no mean feat and puts Mick further towards the top of the all time leader board for ocean rowers at sea. Impressive! We’re going to celebrate by having an extra cup of hot chocolate. Yum!

Also while we’re out here together. Spare a thought for Roz Savage who is busily rowing the South Pacific in 3 stages. She’s midway through stage 2 at the moment having left Hawaii a while ago and is busily setting course for one of two Pacific islands (neither of which I’m ashamed to say I’ve heard of). Catch up with her exploits on www.rozsavage.com.

In one of her blogs she mentionned having a dream about us and being jealous because in her dream we could stand up in the cabin and sit down on a proper toilet. I’m sorry to disappoint you Roz but our cabin in the same size as yours and we have to use the bucket on deck just like every other ocean rower. How we’re ever going to intergrate ourselves into civilised society again I will never know.

  2. 1 year in a boat. I knew there’d be a reason to celebrate something tonight. I shall crack a cold one to that.

  3. I have an excellent photo of two of us crapping over opposite gunwales. It’s important to do this activity in pairs or you tip the boat and land in the poo. Also, you can hold the paper for each other.

I can highly recommend it. There’s no bucket to wash and the flush is excellent.

  4. Or if you wedge a strong bucket between the runners of the rear rowing position it creates the stable sit onable throne that Roz was obviously dreaming about…

Some ghastly news from my end for you is that some close family friends who live out in India had their house broken into by dacoits (armed bandit types) last night who beat them over the head with a wooden club with a nail in it. She had clots and swelling on the brain which they treated and she’s now stable but they don’t know what the long term damage to her brain will be as she still hasn’t come round. He is in a critical condition with multiple fractures to his skull and might not make it. We are all so worried and praying they both make a full recovery, but it’s not looking good. Things like that put life in perspective, especially shitty days on the sea anchor hey?! Totally horrific, words cannot even describe. So when you look up at the stars tonight send out a little prayer for my auntie Heather and uncle Erico.

  5. Hello lads
Firstly, a message to Margaret - my thoughts are with you and your family after the horrific raid and attack on your Auntie Heather and Uncle Erico - what an absolute nightmare - when I first started reading your message, I thought it was the beginning of some horror movie type story to amuse Chris and Mick, but then oh my god - how awful! I ddo hope they are being well cared for, and will be ok.

Secondly, a message to Laser.Beam - oh what bucket humour eh!! Teeheehee.

An to our rowing heroes I say keep enjoying riding the waves, the progress sounds good. Was interested to hear that Roz Savage has been and gone from hawaii - I will visit her site - I have memories, as you do, Chris, of following her solo rowing effort the Atlantic - and now, although she does not have competition and is not racing, she has a much bigger route to tackle - as you boys do too! Keeeeeep smiling, keeeeep rowing and keeeeep safe.

  6. Hi Chris, the family has been quiet recently, (except for Dad Martin of course), so thought I would say hello. Are you sure Mick is not pulling your leg about sighting Killer Whales etc? Perhaps spending such a huge amount of time in a little boat in a big ocean has affected his brain..will judge better when I get to meet the man…. Also a huge thanks to Richard for looking after this blog, it must take lots of time, commitment and energy. It was worrying when you weren’t there first thing this morning. Do you have Handel’s Water Music on your stereo system? It was on the Proms last night, reminded me of you.

  7. Margaret I join Sue and I’m sure the other bloggers plus the crew of Bo in wishing Heather and Erico all the best. Shocking attack I hope the culprits are apprehended.

Mick huge congratulations on your one year at sea, an impressive achievment, have you yet realised that you can fly across the Atlantic and Pacific, and for the amount the boats cost you could go first class!

Good job chaps and I also echo anthill in thanking Webmaster Richard on keeping the posts coming, great job “Team Bo!”

  8. Following on from Biff’s message addressed to “Team Bo” - I SECOND THAT!! Good thought about flying first class over the North Pacific instead of Rowing to save money - Chris and Mick would get to the Golden Gate weeks and weeks before their spectators/well-wishers!! They might have to put up with the Bolognasty while on the flight, but probably only for one meal, and not for days and days and days….!
So Chris and Mick - keeeeeep smiling, keeeeeeep rowing and keeeeeeep safe
